Not sure what to wear for your engagement photos? Angels Photography shares expert tips on outfits, colors, and styles to help you look and feel your best on your special day.
Are you engaged and getting ready for your engagement session but totally stumped on what to wear? You’re not alone! This is one of the most common questions we get, and we’re here to make the process fun and stress-free.
Your engagement photos are a beautiful milestone, and what you wear plays a huge role in how your images turn out. The right outfits can make you look polished, connected as a couple, and timeless. The wrong ones? They can be distracting or feel “off” years down the road.
Here’s everything you need to know to choose the perfect outfits for your engagement session.
Start with a Color Palette, Not Matching Outfits
One of the biggest engagement photo mistakes couples make is wearing identical or perfectly “matchy-matchy” outfits. Instead of matching exactly, we recommend coordinating your colors.
Choose 2–3 colors that complement each other and work with your session location. For example:
- Dusty rose and navy blue
- Cream and olive green
- Rust, tan, and white
- Burgundy and charcoal gray
This approach makes you look like a cohesive, stylish couple without looking like you’re wearing a uniform. It also gives your gallery visual interest and variety.
Pro tip from Angels Photography: Pull up your location on Pinterest or Instagram for inspiration. If you’re shooting in a sunflower field, earthy warm tones will look stunning. For a downtown urban session, deeper jewel tones tend to pop beautifully.

Choose Outfits That Reflect YOUR Style
Your engagement photos should feel like you, not like a styled shoot you found on a blog. If you’re a casual, laid-back couple, you don’t need to wear formal attire just because it seems “photo-worthy.” If you’re a boho romantic, lean into that!
Ask yourself: What would we wear on a really great date night? That’s usually the sweet spot.
Some popular engagement session styles include:
- Casual chic — Nice jeans, a flowy blouse, and a well-fitted button-down for him
- Romantic & elegant — A maxi dress or flowy midi skirt for her, dress pants and a blazer for him
- Boho — Lace, floral prints, earthy tones, and natural textures
- Classic & timeless — Neutral colors, clean lines, and simple silhouettes that never go out of style
Whatever your vibe, own it. Confidence is the most photogenic thing you can wear.
What to Avoid When Choosing Your Outfits
Now that we’ve talked about what to do, here’s what we recommend avoiding for your engagement session:
Busy patterns and logos. Large graphic tees, loud prints, or clothing with brand logos can pull attention away from your faces and become very distracting in photos. Stick to solids or subtle textures.
Neon or overly bright colors. While color is great, neon shades can cause a color cast on your skin and become the focal point of every image. Opt for softer, more muted tones instead.
Overly stiff or uncomfortable clothing. If you feel uncomfortable, it’ll show. Avoid outfits that are too tight, too short, or just don’t feel like you. You’ll be walking, sitting, hugging, and laughing; you want to move freely.
Clothes you’ve never worn before. New shoes that haven’t been broken in? A brand-new dress you haven’t tried sitting down in? Save those for another day. Wear outfits you feel comfortable and confident in.
Wrinkled clothing. Wrinkles are very visible in photos. Steam or iron everything the night before your session.
Consider Your Session Location
Where you’re shooting should influence what you wear. At Angels Photography, we love helping our clients choose outfits that complement the setting beautifully.
- Beach or waterfront — Light, airy fabrics in white, cream, soft blue, or blush. Flowing dresses photograph beautifully in the breeze.
- Wooded or nature settings — Earthy tones like green, rust, mustard, or brown blend seamlessly with natural surroundings.
- Urban or city settings — Darker, bolder tones and structured silhouettes tend to look sharp and modern.
- Golden hour / sunset sessions — Warm tones like terracotta, peach, and dusty rose look absolutely gorgeous in that magical light.

Plan Two Outfits for More Variety
We always recommend that our couples bring two different outfits to their engagement session! One more casual, and one more dressed up. This gives your gallery more variety and makes it much easier to choose photos for save-the-dates, websites, albums, and more.
Plan a quick outfit change mid-session (we’ll find a natural break point) so you can enjoy both looks without feeling rushed.
Tips for Him
Men often find it harder to pull together a look for engagement photos. Here are a few go-to options that photograph beautifully:
- Well-fitted chinos or dress pants in neutral tones (navy, gray, tan, olive)
- A button-down shirt, linen shirt, or casual blazer
- Clean, simple sneakers or dress shoes. Typically no athletic sneakers or worn-out shoes
- A watch or simple accessories can add a nice touch
The key for men is fit. Clothing that fits well (not too baggy, not too tight) will always look polished in photos.
Tips for Hair, Makeup & Accessories
Keep makeup natural and slightly elevated. You want to look like the best version of yourself and not overly done up. A professional blowout or simple style that photographs well is always a great call.
Accessories matter. A delicate necklace, earrings, or a beautiful watch can add personality to your look. Just avoid anything too large or distracting.
Show off your ring! This is an engagement session, after all. Keep your ring clean and polished for your session.
Nails count. Your hands will be in many of your photos. A simple manicure in a neutral or soft color is a lovely detail.
