How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer

(And the Red Flags to Watch Out For)

Not sure how to find the right wedding photographer? Angels Photography shares what to look for, what to avoid, and the questions every couple should ask before booking.

Are you newly engaged and starting to think about your wedding photographer — but feeling overwhelmed by all the options? You’re not alone! This is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make during your wedding planning, and we want to make it a lot easier for you.

Here’s the truth: your wedding photos are the one thing you’ll have long after the cake is eaten and the flowers have wilted. The DJ playlist gets forgotten, the centerpieces go home with guests — but your photos? Those stay with you forever.

So let’s make sure you get them right.

Start with the Portfolio — But Look at the Full Picture

The first thing most couples do is fall in love with a photographer’s Instagram. And that’s a great starting point! But Instagram only shows you the highlights. What you really want to see is a full wedding gallery from start to finish.

Ask any photographer you’re considering to share 2–3 complete galleries from real weddings. This shows you:

  • How they handle different lighting conditions (bright outdoor ceremony vs. dark reception hall)
  • Whether their style is consistent throughout the whole day
  • How they capture candid moments, not just posed portraits
  • How they photograph family formals, details, and in-between moments

A few stunning photos don’t tell the whole story. A full gallery does.

Pro tip from Angels Photography: Make sure the galleries they share are from venues or settings similar to yours. A photographer who excels at bright outdoor sessions may struggle in a dimly lit ballroom — and vice versa.

Make Sure Their Style Matches Your Vision

Not all wedding photography looks the same, and it shouldn’t! There are distinct styles, and it’s important that your photographer’s aesthetic genuinely matches what you’re dreaming of.

Some popular styles include:

  • Light and airy — bright, soft, romantic images with lifted shadows and warm tones
  • Moody and editorial — dramatic contrast, deep shadows, and rich colors
  • Documentary / photojournalistic — candid, storytelling-focused, minimal posing
  • Classic and timeless — clean, well-lit, traditional images that never go out of style

Browse their portfolio and ask yourself: Do I love every image, or just some of them? You want to feel consistent excitement, not just occasional sparks.

Prioritize Personality and Communication

Here’s something couples don’t always think about: you will spend more time with your wedding photographer than with almost any other vendor on your wedding day. They’ll be there from getting ready all the way through the reception.

That means chemistry matters.

During your consultation, pay attention to:

  • Do they ask thoughtful questions about your wedding and your relationship?
  • Do you feel comfortable around them, or a little stiff?
  • Are they warm, calm, and easy to talk to?
  • Do they listen, or mostly talk about themselves?

Your comfort with your photographer shows up directly in your photos. Couples who feel relaxed and at ease look relaxed and at ease. It’s that simple.

Also pay close attention to how quickly and clearly they communicate from the very beginning. Slow or vague responses before you’ve even booked them is a preview of what’s to come.

What to Avoid — The Red Flags to Watch Out For

Just as important as knowing what to look for is knowing what should give you pause. Here are the warning signs we always tell couples to watch for:

Only showing you a highlight reel. If a photographer can’t — or won’t — show you full wedding galleries, that’s a problem. Curated collections only show their best moments, not their consistency.

No written contract. Every professional wedding photographer should have a clear contract that outlines the number of photos, delivery timeline, your printing rights, and the cancellation policy. Never book without one.

Asking for full payment upfront. A deposit is normal and expected. Asking for 100% payment before your wedding day is not.

No backup plan. Ask what happens if they get sick or have an emergency. Do they have a trusted backup photographer? If the answer is “I’ll figure it out,” that’s not good enough.

No backup equipment. Cameras fail — it happens to everyone. Professionals always carry spare bodies and lenses. If they can’t tell you what their backup gear situation is, take note.

Pricing that’s way below market rate. We completely understand the desire to save money on a wedding. But if a photographer’s prices seem too good to be true, they usually are. Unusually cheap rates often mean limited experience, outsourced editing, slow delivery, or missing services. Quality wedding photography is a real investment, and the price typically reflects that.

Pressure to book immediately. Any photographer who creates a sense of fake urgency or makes you feel rushed into a decision isn’t someone you want to work with.

Your gut says something’s off. Always, always trust your instincts. You’re handing this person one of the most important days of your life. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to keep looking.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

Walking into a consultation with the right questions will save you from a lot of uncertainty down the road. Here’s what we recommend asking every photographer you meet with:

  • Can I see 2–3 full wedding galleries from events similar to mine?
  • What happens if you have an emergency on my wedding day?
  • Do you bring backup cameras and equipment?
  • Is a second shooter included in your packages, or available as an add-on?
  • How many edited photos can we expect to receive?
  • What’s your typical turnaround time for delivering the final gallery?
  • Will we have full printing rights to our photos?
  • Can you help us build a realistic timeline for the day so we have time for all the shots we want?

A confident, experienced photographer will have clear, comfortable answers to all of these. If they seem caught off guard or vague, pay attention.

Book Early, Earlier Than You Think!

This is one of the most important pieces of advice we can give: don’t wait. The best wedding photographers book up fast — often 12 to 18 months in advance, especially for popular weekend dates in spring, fall, and summer.

Once you find a photographer whose work you love, who you connect with, and who gives you all the right answers? Book them. Don’t go home and “think about it” for three weeks. Your dream photographer may not be available by the time you come back.
